A new concrete skatepark will give the skateboarders
in our town a safe, fun and dedicated place to skateboard.
The existing wooden skatepark is in disrepair, not as safe
as a concrete skatepark and cannot be expanded because of
the trees. The popularity of skateboarding is growing by
leaps and bounds. Just five years ago there were only 200
skateparks across the United States. Now there are over
2,000 and that number is growing. Skateboarding is a highly
athletic and energizing activity – and best of all,
it brings kids outside, away from videogames and television
sets.
There’s a saying that if your town
doesn’t have a skatepark, then, your town IS the
skatepark. St. Helena doesn’t have an adequate or
desirable place for skateboarding, resulting in the
sometimes unwelcome use of driveways and streets, public
parking lots, and public buildings, like schools and
businesses. The skatepark addresses this issue head on by
providing skateboarders an alternate, exciting place to
skate. We are involving local skaters in the planning,
design and implementation of the park so it will be
functional and attractive to them. We have four skaters on
the Advisory Committee and more involved in all our
fundraising activities.
Crane Park is the ideal site
for the skatepark. After extensive research the
Skatepark Committee Board of Directors, with the
support of City officials, selected Crane Park as the
top choice for the skatepark. Crane Park is the ideal
spot for a skatepark because it is owned by the City,
is highly visible and is already designated for
recreational use. Furthermore, the skatepark is a
natural fit in the City’s long term plan to meet
the recreational needs of our diverse community.
